6 Tips for Avoiding High Blood Pressure

It is estimated that between 20% and 25% of the adult population has high blood pressure, and about 10% have blood pressure high enough to require treatment.

Your blood pressure depends on how much force your heart uses to pump blood throughout your body. The greater the force with which blood is pumped through your body, the higher your blood pressure will be. For example, if you are overweight, your heart has to work harder than usual because there is greater resistance in your body.

1. Eat less salt

Salt has a negative effect on your blood pressure. Salt accumulates in the blood and draws fluid into the blood vessels. It is this process that causes your blood pressure to rise. You can cut back on salt both by avoiding over-salting your food and by reducing your intake of, for example, cold cuts, licorice, and fast food. These foods contain high amounts of salt.

2. Avoid being overweight

If you are overweight, it affects the hormones in your body, which can lead to high blood pressure. That is why it is important to keep your weight at a healthy, normal level—or as close to it as possible.

3. Drink less alcohol

Heavy alcohol consumption can lead to high blood pressure. You can enjoy a glass of wine every now and then without feeling guilty, but it’s important not to exceed the weekly alcohol limit recommended by the Danish Health Authority. That is, 7 standard drinks for women and 14 standard drinks for men.

4. Avoid cigarettes

High blood pressure is exacerbated by smoking. This is due to the nicotine in tobacco, which is used in cigarettes. Nicotine triggers the release of the hormone adrenaline. This hormone causes blood vessels to constrict and the heart to beat faster, which ultimately leads to an increase in blood pressure.

5. Get some exercise

All forms of exercise help lower blood pressure. Exercise that raises your heart rate causes your blood vessels to dilate, thereby lowering your blood pressure. Sedentary work can have a negative impact on blood pressure.

6. Avoid stress

Stress can quickly cause blood pressure to rise. People experiencing prolonged stress, in particular, may feel the effects on their bodies. That’s why it’s important to avoid stress or overly stressful situations if you have high blood pressure. Make sure you take time to relax, clear your mind, and process all the experiences you have each day. For example, you can go for a walk and enjoy nature, so you get some exercise at the same time.
